Essentials for the New Farming
The Technical Background to the Use of the Leading Specialist Adjuvants in Agriculture
Adjuvant benefits
Changes to be introduced under the MTR are wide ranging and will have a significant impact on agriculture. Growers will increasingly focus on the cost of production per tonne and compare these figures with the likely income they can expect from selling the crop.

This means a greater focus on the cost of inputs. Here, the use of adjuvants will help growers to improve profit margins during these difficult times by maximising input efficiency and maximising production and quality.

Adjuvants have the ability to maximise pesticide and trace element performance in a number of ways:
1. Improve activity within the spray tank by:
  • improving chemical compatibility
  • improving water quality (adjust pH (buffering), removing antagonistic calcium and magnesium ions)
  • 2. Improve spray quality by:
  • reducing drift
  • reducing evaporation of the spray mixture
  • 3. Improve spray retention by:
  • reducing bounce
  • improving coverage (of waxy leaves, upright grass-weeds)
  • improving spray distribution (in dense crops or through the soil structure)
  • 4. Improve spray penetration, allowing:
  • improved uptake through waxy cuticles
  • improved activity at lower temperature
  • 5. Improve translocation of the spray. This will:
  • improve speed of kill
  • improve activity against ‘difficult-to-control’ weeds (target spectrum)
  • improve activity against bigger weeds
  • Interagro have developed a range of adjuvants over the past 10 years which help to carry out the above.
